Comments on the Description of Aphanius marassantensis by Pfleiderer, Geiger & Herder, 2014, with proposed synonymization.

Huber, J.H.

Abstract: Following the publication by Pfleiderer, Geiger and Herder describing a new Aphanius species as marassantensis in 2014, the definition and geolocalization of the type localities of danfordii and chantrei are re-evaluated and precised. The type locality and a non-type locality of marassantensis both lies within the biological type region of chantrei and according to ICZN rules relative to the type-species and to the attached type-locality, chantrei and marassantensis cannot be nomenclaturally separated and marassantensis should be synonymized into chantrei, as its junior synonym, and chantrei should be revalidated, as a cryptic species of danfordii, still unknown live. Systematically speaking, since the type locality of marassantensis has been wisely selected as not neighboring to that of chantrei by Pfleiderer et al., and because they misenditified their material of danfordii, following others, there is a putative possibility that a future study shows that topotypes of marassantensis are distinct from topotypes of chantrei and/or topotypes of danfordii and warrant 2 (or 3) different names with new separating diagnoses, like present molecular knowledge tends to show. Other options are also discussed that may result in a putative revalidation of marassantensis.
