Describer(s): Hay

Year of description: 1885

Original description: Hay, O.P. 1885. Notes on a Collection of Fishes from Florida, with Descriptions of new or little known Species. Proc. U.S. Nat. Mus., 8: 556.

Gender/Accordance: [Adj.]

SYSTEMATICS: auroguttatus F.

Current status: = cingulatus

Status evaluation (current): unconfirmed by several authors.

Systematic remarks (with taxonomic history): well defined (taxonomic history : consistently considered as a junor synonym of rubrifrons, itself synonym of cingulatus since 1896 ; up to Gilbert et al., 1992, who revalidate it along with rubrifrons and propose to change the identification of cingulatus based on the analysis of today available type in Paris MNHN ; in 2002, Lazara reverses the situation by maintaining cingulatus as valid with its previous definition and by allocating the types of its junior synonym, auroguttatus to cingulatus, in place of the «erroneous», mis-matching type in MNHN).
